Recurrent materials in Fragmentario’s work in a technique she has defined as “entrelazado”, the Spanish word for both textile interweaving and interleaving. Ongoing (Brooklyn, NY) Rosa Terráqueo is a textile exploration of water quality through the lens of botanical dyes. Avocado seeds and a variety of water samples from around the world, each with its own level of alkalinity and mineral content, are used to produce a spectrum of pink tones. The project was inspired by the wide range of pink hues obtained in a series of avocado dye workshops conducted across Europe in the summer of 2017 by Fragmentario. Upon returning to Brooklyn, experiments began in order to reproduce the water of various locations using household materials, such as lime and salts to transform the soft, neutral water of New York into a variety of harder, basic and acidic waters. Simultaneously, a network of collaborators has provided water samples from around the world– Colombia, France, Greece, India, Japan, Mexico, among others– which have been used to map the range of avocado pink hues. Both experiments were integral in understanding how different markers of water quality affected color. The results were used to infuse a range of hues onto deadstock silk fabrics. Rosa Terráqueo seeks to visually illustrate the significance of water quality and to question how these variables affect our environments and ourselves. once was an Okaki (rice cracker) factory that has been out of business for 20. It is located in a residential area at Tengachaya Nishinariku, Osaka. The former factory space is still decaying and continuously exists along the flow of time without any artificial renovation. Avocado invasion at the rice cracker factory: In March 2019 Fragmentario did an installation of Rosa Terráqueo and it's supporting projects in this space. Sounds, textiles, research and garments occupied Yamamoto-Seika. economies by using alternative production methods and to activate conversations about waste in the food and textile industries. Since 2017, Fragmentario has partnered with various New York based restaurants to collect their avocado seeds that would otherwise become waste and used them instead to deadstock silk and linen fabrics. The project borrows its name from the word for avocado used by Aztecs in México before the colonization of the Americas. It was transformed into “aguacate” by the Spanish colonizers and then evolved into the English word “avocado”. An unlikely survivor of the Cenozoic era and praised by their taste and nutritional properties, avocados are ever-present, notwithstanding their luxury status (already in 1914, the price for one avocado in the U.S. would be equivalent to $24.90 in 2018). This popularity has brought diverse complications. From deforestation, to a profitable black market and even expensive injuries (surgeries related to "avocado hand" can cost up to $20,000). Even so, their consumption stays on the rise. In the U.S. alone, the yearly per capita consumption of avocados has increased from 1 pound in 1989 to 7 pounds in 2016. An often-overlooked property of the avocado is its dyeing capabilities: its seed capable of yield a blush tone onto fabric, which is highly dependable, due to the high tannins it contains.
